Diversity is a topic itself diverse in nature. Its diverse nature troubles the sociology students and thus they have to turn online for homework answers.
So literally understanding, diversity is the existence of people from different backgrounds, race, caste, sex, class together and in a peaceful manner. Indians can at best understand this meaning of diversity solely because of the existence of different cultures, languages, attires, cuisines, etc.
In the country. The diverse nature of the Indian subcontinent appeals to the countries around the world. The country itself offers a vibrant culture and is a perfect example of unity in diversity.
But diversity exists even at simpler levels, in schools, offices, clubs, and other such places. Different students from different backgrounds, religion, caste, race and sex gather in schools, to study together.
In fact the purpose of schools and the existence of their uniforms is to fulfill the task of acquainting the students with each other so that they understand the importance of peaceful co-existence.
Let us then Understand the Types of Diversity:
1. Cultural Diversity:
This type of diversity deals with the existence of different cultures into a particular region. For example, in India there are different states and each has its own cultural background.
North India has different sense of dressing, different languages, different cuisines, and the like while South India has different ones. While we predominantly speak Hindi in north India there are various South Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada in South India.
Then Maharashtra has its own dance form Lavani, its own language Marathi and the like. Therefore all these states have their own unique culture yet all of them peacefully coexist in India.
2. Racial Diversity:
This implies the difference in people based on their physical features despite the scientific view that a race is the based on social construct rather than on the physical features.
Races can be like Africans, Latin-Americans, Asians, etc. The vast existence of all these races is known as racial diversity. You see an intermingling of these diversities in colleges and universities nowadays because people from different races gather to study together.
For example: a group of university students have gathered to work together on a research paper writing. Here students from all races are included, they work together and set example of peaceful co-existence.
3. Religious Diversity:
As the name suggests, religious diversity means the existence of various religions and spiritual beliefs. You maybe a follower of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, and the like. All these religions have the same beliefs yet said in a different way, hence again unity in diversity.
4. Age Diversity:
Very simple to understand- the existence of various age group people together is what is called age diversity. Childhood, adult and old age, people from all these groups exist together. Obviously when a child is born, his father is adult and grandfather old. In the process when this child will become adult, his own child will be born, and his father has now become grandfather. This cycle cannot be broken therefore the existence of various age groups is undeniable.
5. Gender Diversity:
Be it males, females, transgenders, all exist together, this is known as gender diversity. It also includes co-existence of people of different sexual orientation together. With the developing times, developments have been seen in the mindset of a few, thus co-existence of such people is not that difficult.
6. Disabled:
People with different disabilities, physical or mental also exist with the people who are perfectly fine. In fact several provisions are made for such people to bring them on plane surface with the normal people.
7. Class Diversity:
Rich or poor, existence of all such people together is called class diversity. It is classified on economic basis and thus exist the upper class, the upper middle class, the lower middle class and the lower class. The class division happens basically because of the accumulation of wealth with some individuals while other are denied excessively.
8. Others:
There are several other types of diversities wherein people from different educational background exist together. Such people may also have a different personality yet they exist together.
The existence of diversity may have a lot of impact on different people:
- It may promote sharing of wide variety of ideas among people. Be it in an organization or in school, diversity plays this important role. Since people from different backgrounds mingle you may have good brainstorming and several new ideas. Similarly it will definitely favor research paper writing since people carry with themselves the information of their own area and thus contribute this way.
- Sharing of immense knowledge among people happens here. Your grandfather may share with you his era, your father his own and then you are living into a different one. Thus you get a knowledge of all times.
- People understand the importance of unity while living in such a diverse atmosphere.
- In case of religious diversity, you understand the importance and values and beliefs of other religions as well, thus gaining immense knowledge.
- Same is done by cultural diversity, we learn everything about the other person’s culture and thus get knowledge.
- But diversity may also cause conflicts, people may fight for their own side ignoring the other side completely.
- It may also tilt the balance of power towards the economically stable ones, thus depriving the poor of their rights.
Therefore diversity has its own pros and cons but yes I would reiterate that unity is the most essential impact of diversity. Thus these points must be kept in mind by sociology students while working upon their homework answers on diversity. And of course, other than this, as said earlier, diversity is a vast topic to be explored.
